Calling
Is it just me, or is there something uniquely beautiful about vintage photographs - the colours, the graininess, the contrast, the special memories of the past and feelings that they invoke?
I found this one in a box of photos at my family home and was immediately taken with it. I spent quite a lot of time figuring out the best way to frame this picture - I loved all the photo’s details but just couldn’t fit it all in!
This picture went through quite a few versions as I struggled to produce an artwork that was a little different to my previous work - less realistic and a bit more impressionistic. In essence, I wanted to start on the path of discovering my own style and voice.
Unsurprisingly, the first version turned out very realistic and so layer, upon layer, I worked to create something different in this piece. Somehow the picture told me that it needed those blocks of pastel colour, and I loved the effect that they created.
I love the calmness and simplicity of this piece. It is the feature artwork in my living room and I enjoy looking at it every day.
More importantly, this piece showed me that good things can happen when you trust your intuition and allow yourself to experiment. It reignited my passion for art, which set me on the journey I am on today to pursue art as my ‘small is beautiful’.
