The Commission Process.
Simple and Enjoyable…
I want to make art for people like me: those leading humble and hearfelt lives, with a keen appreciation of beauty, and a desire to create a home that expresses who they are. As such, I aspire to make custom art as accessible as possible, by designing the commission process to be easy, affordable and enjoyable.
I now have some set price custom portrait listings in my shop to make the process of commissioning a portrait of your human and animal friends even simpler and more straightforward. If your idea doesn’t fit with these standard offerings, we will work together through the process detailed below to create something unique just for you.
Get in touch
Look through the artwork on my site and take note of the artworks that speak to you, and capture your attention or heart. Think about the subject you would like featured in the artwork, whether you would prefer an artwork on artist paper or a work on canvas or wood panel, what size you might be looking for, whether there is a timeframe in which you need the artwork, etc…
Is the artwork for you or someone you love? Tell me a little about the recipient of the artwork. Art is very personal, so the more you can tell me, the more information and inspiration I have to create a work that is ‘you’ and that you will love.
Send me an email with the above details and ideas so that I can gain an understanding of what you might be looking for and we can start a conversation about the possibilities of creating a work just for you.
Design and refine it
Next I will ask you to send me any relevant source material, whether it is a photograph of someone you love for a portrait, a family holiday snap, or a picture of a beloved animal… The quality of the photograph is important if you are looking for a detailed, representational artwork. However, if you have an old vintage photograph that isn’t the best quality, I will still do my best to create an artwork that you will love.
After reviewing this material I will send you a quote detailing the cost of the artwork based on our discussions.
While each commission is unique, depending on the subject matter and style, the following provides an estimate of what you can expect to pay for my standard sized artworks at this time:
A4 on quality artist paper $150-200 AUD
A3 on quality artist paper $200-300 AUD
A2 on quality artist paper $300-450 AUD
40x50cm or 45x45cm canvas $450-$550 AUD
50x60cm canvas $500-$700 $ AUD
Note: these estimated costs do not include packing and shipping charges. For more information on shipping methods and cost, please visit my FAQs page.
If the quote is acceptable to you, a 30% deposit is required to engage my time to develop the concept sketches for your approval.
Once we are both happy with the design concept, a further 30% is payable to engage my services to produce the artwork.
Create it
I then get to work creating your custom artwork within the timeframe we have discussed. This will typically be between 1-2 weeks, or up to one month for a larger artwork, depending on my availability. It is important to remember to take the drying time of the artwork into consideration, when thinking about timeframes.
I will keep you informed of my progress with regular email updates to ensure the final artwork meets your expectations.
I will email you a digital image/s of the completed artwork for your approval. Once we are both happy with the finished piece, the final 40% payment is required before I carefully package up the artwork and post it to you.
Share it
A little piece of me and a whole lot of love goes into each artwork. I would love to hear your thoughts on the artwork, or the reaction of the recipient, if the artwork is a gift. I would also be delighted to see photographs of the art in its new home.
Make it yours.
