I was honoured to be asked to develop an artwork for the cover of a very special book being created as a 40th birthday gift for a much loved woman by her close friend and colleague. This book was to feature letters and photos from her family and friends, capturing how they felt about her, as well as the heartfelt, and sometimes humourous, stories of time spent together.

From the outset the request was for the artwork to feature a pelican, as they were symbolic and very special to the birthday girl. However, I also chose to incorporate additional symbolism in reference to some of her other favourite things, as well as hints to her past to represent her strong appreciation and love of family.

The compilation of the letters was art in itself - each thoughtfully and painstakingly arranged and photographed individually by her lovely friend in creative and beautiful ways.

It was no surprise that the recipient was overwhelmed with emotion on being presented with this lovely gift at her 40th birthday party - such a very personal and heartfelt gift will surely be treasured always.
